Papillomavirus!!!

One day I was looking at my dog’s mouth when I noticed a little bump growing just outside of his lip. First what started as one quickly started to multiply. The first one I spotted looked like a little pimple. Then it grew into a spongy looking sea anemone. I was FREAKING out! I researched it and found out it was called Papillomavirus. A very common disease amongst puppies and older dogs as their immune systems aren’t strong. It is saliva transferred. So if one dog at the park has it, he or she can spread the virus every dog she plays with when they nip each other in the mouth.

When I took my pup to the vet he suggested an antibiotic which I read does nothing. I decided to trust him. He’s a certified veterinarian after all. 10 days of Clavamox and just as I suspected, it did nothing. The doctor said that we can just wait for it to go away on its own but if not we can operate. Papillomavirus can get out of hand where it takes over the dog’s whole mouth and throat which can get dangerous as it constricts breathing. The vet said operating does not guarantee it will cure it and they can all just grow back. That was the last time I went to that doctor.

I went home and started doing my own research. It took a bit of digging but I finally found it! Thuja 200ck did the trick! I gave my pup 3 pellets twice a day and the bumps started to shrink within a week. After a few weeks they completely disappeared! It has to be 200ck Thuja though. Whole Foods and other health food stores have Thuja 20g which does nothing. I found my Thuja 200ck on Amazon. <3

Natural Flea Repellent

If you’re like me you may not be comfortable putting a pesticide on your furry, four-legged child. One year my pup’s flea infestation was so bad I almost picked up a box of Frontline. After seeing Bayer, who makes most of the country’s pesticides, is the manufacturer of Frontline I put the box back on the shelf. On top of that my dog has the MDR1 gene which means he has a drug sensitivity and cannot have those chemical flea treatments. I found this out through his Embark Health and Breed Kit.

Because of my dog’s drug sensitivity and my holistic lifestyle I researched other options for repelling fleas. I found out that Vitamin B50 repels fleas! You want to make sure the one you choose just has Vitamin B50 with as little other stuff in it that you can find because dog’s don’t need all that. After reading the ingredients of tons of bottles I found that Solgar’s B50 Complex seemed to have the simplest ingredients. My dog is 70 pounds so I give him one capsule a day. I just open it up and mix it in with his food. Bye bye fleas!

My pet is losing his hair!

Alopecia X? Mange? Allergies? Stress? I couldn't figure out why my dog was losing his hair. This was him in January 2014.

Later the hair on his back began to thin until it was almost completely gone. He looked like the picture below for over a year. I tried everything from changing his diet, trying different shampoos, changing his routines, everything. Nothing worked so I figured it was just old age.

I wanted to make sure it wasn't anything serious since he is very old. I decided to get some blood work done. The vet told me his thyroid level was low. He immediately prescribed him medication. At the time still trusting my vet I started giving my dog the Tyrovet pills. After a fews months of seeing no results I took him off the medication.

One day I came across a couple who also had a Pomeranian. They told me their Pom was losing hair on their back. The vet told them their dog had a thyroid condition. It wasn't that. They started giving their Pom Melatonin and his fur grew back. I decided to give it a shot thinking it couldn't hurt since it's a vitamin. I started off giving my dog 3mg once a day in July 2015. Nothing happened so I increased him to 3mg twice a day in August 2015. Now it's September and check out how much hair has grown back!

Melatonin worked like a charm for my 14 year old Pomeranian. I use  Nature Made 3mg Melatonin. Amazon sells it for $6.74 for 240 pills. That's $0.03 a tab.

Don't worry. Melatonin does not make dogs sleepy like it does humans. Don't waste your time and money on lab fees and doctor visits. Give this a shot. Based off pictures I found on Google I believe my dog had Alopecia X but I don't know for sure. Since he's not in pain or having other issues I don't really care what it was. I'm just glad the Melatonin is working. I can't wait to see how much if not all his hair grows back in a few more months!
